چکیده

Abstract Supplementary feeding is a commonly used wildlife management practice, but while it may bring benefits and fulfil goals, can also result in unintended negative consequences. In the temperate zone, winter supplementary reduce movement of some ungulate species, leading to increased utilization sites by individuals and, consequently, animal aggregation. However, intensity site vary depending on various extrinsic factors, e.g. habitat type, population density or weather conditions. Here, we predicted that index utilization, expressed as distance European bison ( Bison bonasus ) sites, would be positively associated with severity conditions; thus, will closer colder days presence snow cover. We analysed (December March) tracking data 43 VHF- GPS-collared (24 males 19 females) collected from 2005 2012 Białowieża Primeval Forest (NE Poland), where are supplementally fed different throughout winter. Female were than winter, regardless sex, closest mid-winter (January February) independently time season. Additionally, distances significantly related cover depth; i.e. present deeper snow. Hence, area occupied differed changing — being 4 28 times larger warmest periods compared coldest (for females males, respectively). This have direct indirect ecological consequences for ecosystem due potential impact nutrient cycling, seed dispersal, interspecific competition, vegetation growth, forest succession carrion distribution. Given these impacts weather-dependent fodder, recognize possible need future revise adapt annual seasonal variation meet goals optimizing costs.

The occurrence of alpha-herpesvirus and pestivirus infections in European bison (Bison bonasus) in the Bialowieza Primeval Forest

Serological survey on the occurrence of alpha-herpesvirus and pestivirus infections in the population of European bison in the Bialowieza Primeval Forest was conducted. Sera from 40 randomly selected individuals were tested using two commercial IDEXX ELISA tests. The study design allowed excluding or confirming the infection with the probability of 95% and at the expected prevalence of 30%. No ...

Detection of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato DNA in the blood of wild bison from Białowieza primeval forest in eastern Poland.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the occurrence of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato DNA in a group of 120 wild bison (Bison bonasus) from the Bialowieza Primeval Forest in eastern Poland. The PCR technique revealed the presence of 16S RNA of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato in the blood of 16 out of 120 examined animals. DNA amplification by means of primers SC1 and SC2 gave a prod...

Transition from traditional to modern forest management shaped the spatial extent of cattle pasturing in Białowieża Primeval Forest in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries

Pasturing of livestock in forests has had profound consequences for Europe's landscapes. In Białowieża Primeval Forest (BPF), cattle pasturing was a part of traditional forest use that ceased only in the second half of the twentieth century.
